School Supplies Drive

Each fall, The Church of the Redeemer, in partnership with the Transitional Housing Corporation and Partner Arms of Washington, D.C., provides backpacks and school supplies to approximately 50 children in need. Donations collected by August 15 will help grateful young students begin the school year on a solid footing. One backpack (and the supplies to fill it) costs approximately $35. Contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to The Church of the Redeemer with “School Supplies” on the memo line.

Forward Day by Day Booklets

The Forward Day by Day booklets for August/September/October are available in the Narthex and Parish Hall. The suggested donation is $1 per booklet.

Monday Evening Gardening

Every Monday evening, 6:00-7:00 p.m., parishioners Frank Anderson and Susan Fitzgerald work in the Redeemer gardens. Frank and Susan hope others will join them. No experience necessary. All are welcome!

Upcoming …

Sunday Early Morning Summer Gatherings

Sunday, August 15

Following the early Eucharist on Sunday, August 15, the 8:00 congregation and clergy will gather at the home of parishioner Susan Grigsby – a wonderful opportunity for fellowship. Whether you are a regular or occasional attendee of the early service, a newcomer, or a guest, we invite you to join us! For more information, contact Joanne Bowman: bowmanjo72@aol.com or 301-469-7405.

Search for the Ninth Bishop of Washington

The Search/Nominating Committee welcomes your feedback on the draft Diocesan Profile at three upcoming town hall-style listening sessions. The nearest session will take place at St. Albans Parish, Washington, DC, July 28, 7;00-9:00 p.m. The draft Diocesan Profile is a compilation of findings from surveys pertaining to the current state and future of the diocese. The survey will be online July 14-24. To complete the survey, visit search.edow.org and click on “Survey”. The draft Diocesan Profile will be available on the website on July 18. Copies will be mailed to the parishes.

Foyer Dinners: Round Six

Since they began in 2008, Foyer Dinners have become an important part of our life as a parish community. Groups of 8-10 parishioners meet about once a month in each other’s homes to share a meal and fellowship. The dinners have helped Redeemer to become a more integrated, well-stimulated and, indeed, well-fed congregation! If you have already participated in Foyer Dinners, or if you would like to join in, please sign-up on the Sign-Up bulletin board in the Parish Hall by August 28. Groups will meet September through mid-December. For more information, contact Huda Kraske: hqkraske@aol.com or

301-656-2087.

Adult Choir: New Singers Welcome

The 2010-11 choral season begins with rehearsal on Thursday, September 2, 7:30-9:30 p.m. New members are welcome! All singers must be able to match pitch and blend. Highlights of the season include a Solemn Requiem Mass, conducted by Dr. Martin Neary, retired Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, a Service of Lessons & Carols for Advent, a Lenten Choral Evensong with the Choir of Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, and a trip to sing two services at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, NYC. For more information, please visit the music page of the parish website: www.redeemerbethesda.org or contact Tom Smith: music.redeemer@verizon.net or 301-229-3770.

Youth Choir: Calling all Children and Youth

The first rehearsal of the Youth Choir will take place on Wednesday, September 8, at 4:15 p.m. An ice cream party follows at 5:00 p.m. New members are welcome! Although there is no minimum age requirement, all choristers must be able to read. Highlights of the 2010-2011 season include several opportunities to sing under Dr. Martin Neary and a trip to sing two services at St. John the Divine, NYC. The Youth Choir is a wonderful – and FREE – opportunity for high quality music education right here at Redeemer. For more information, please visit the music page of the parish website: www.redeemerbethesda.org or contact Tom Smith: 301-229-3770 or music.redeemer@verizon.net.

Redeemer Book Group

The next meeting of the Book Group will take place on Sunday, September 26, at the home of Ellen Shillinglaw. The group is currently reading The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. Written in 1990, this book about Vietnam is frequently included on summer reading lists for schools across the country. The stories are poignant, stunning, harrowing, and unforgettable. All are welcome! For more information, contact Ellen: ellen.shillinglaw@gmail.com or 301-520-6710.

Education for Ministry: Openings Available

Are you interested in exploring your faith, deepening your understanding of the Anglican/Episcopal tradition, and growing in fellowship with other Christians? Then consider joining the Education for Ministry (EfM) group at Redeemer. EfM meets one evening a week, September through May. Classes are based on a curriculum for lay persons developed by the Episcopal seminary at the University of the South. Participants register for one year at a time. Those who complete the entire four-year curriculum, an extraordinarily rich opportunity for learning and fellowship, will have engaged in study of the Old and New Testaments, Church History, and 20th Century Philosophers and Theologians. For more information, contact EfM mentor Jo Barclay-Beard: 301-593-5993 or jobbeard@yahoo.com.

Cathy Baker Run for Kids

Cathy Baker is training to run her first half-marathon (13.1 miles) this fall.  She will be running for Igraa (Arabic for “read”), a program that raises funds and awareness for the education of children and youth in Palestine.  Iqraa is partnered with United Palestinian Appeal (UPA) to make this possible.  UPA is a 501(c)(3) charity founded in 1978.  UPA works with local schools, orphanages, vocational training centers and universities in an effort to strengthen the Palestinian education system.  Iqraa’s support of UPA will go to educatio9n projects in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  All donations to UPA are tax-deductible.  Cathy is challenging herself to run in the Baltimore Running Festival on Saturday, October 16.  While Iqraa is providing her with weekly training until then, she is asking you for your encouragement and financial support.  She is committed to raise $700 for this great cause.  Words of encouragement and any size donation would truly be appreciated!  To support Cathy: 1.
