Worship

"O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness;
let the whole earth stand in awe of him."

-Psalm 96:9

Worship Overview

Worship is at the heart of our parish life.  We gather as a community of faith to praise God, to hear and reflect on God's Word, to be fed in the Sacrament, and to go forth in mission to the world.  Our worship not only expresses who we are, it makes us who we are.

Praying shapes believing.  At Redeemer, Christian formation begins when parents bring their children to church; even the youngest among us participate in worship.  On Sunday morning, children and youth gather as part of the worshipping community at the beginning of the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist.  They go to Church School during the Liturgy of the Word, except during all-parish services, when young people serve as lectors.  Children and youth return to the sanctuary at the Peace so that they may participate in the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

At Redeemer, all who seek a deeper relationship with God in Jesus Christ are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the Lord's Table.  Typically, the chalice at the right side of the altar contains grape juice; the others contain wine.  Gluten-free Communion wafers are available.  Those who do not wish to receive Holy Communion are welcome to come forward to the altar rail to receive a blessing.  Children of all ages, including infants, may receive communion with their parents' consent.

Sunday Services

The Holy Eucharist

Sunday at 8:00 a.m.

A quiet, contemplative liturgy with a sermon.  The congregation gathers around the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Prayers for healing with laying on of hands are offered on the first Sunday of each month.  Children are welcome!

Choral Eucharist

Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

A joyous liturgy that embraces the fullness of the Anglican tradition.  Service includes sermon, hymns and choral music sung by the Adult and Youth choirs.  Parishioners of all ages serve as cruficer, torch bearers, acolytes, lectors and chalice bearers.  Prayers for healing with laying on of hands are offered on the first Sunday of each month.

Weekday Services

Morning Prayer

Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

Within the context of the Daily Office, intercessory prayer is offered for those who have been commended to our prayers.  The service is followed by a light breakfast in the Parish Hall.

The Holy Eucharist

Wednesday at 12 noon

An informal service using the Book of Common Prayer: Rite Two and materials from Enriching our Worship.  The homily includes dialogue about the lectionary readings among the celebrant and people.  The congregation gathers around the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Monthly Services

Taizé Service of Prayer and Meditation

First Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. (every Monday of Lent)

An informal, contemplative service with scripture, icons, incense, silence and chant accompanied by piano, guitar and other instruments.

A Service of Healing and Holy Communion

Third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

A quiet, contemplative liturgy with a Litany for Healing, laying of on hands, and the Holy Eucharist.

Chorister Evensong

First Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

Sung prayer at the close of the day, led by Redeemer's treble choristers.  Liturgy includes traditional musical settings of the responses, psalm and canticles, as well as an anthem and a hymn.

Seasonal Services

Redeemer's regular round of worship includes many services marking specific occasions in the Church Year.  These include a Service of Lessons and Carols for the First Sunday in Advent, a Requiem Mass on or near the Feast of All Souls, Choral Evensong for the First Sunday in Lent, as well as special liturgies at Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.  Please contact the Parish Office for more information about seasonal and summer service schedules.

Participation in Worship

The word liturgy is derived from two Greek words meaning “work of the people”.  By their presence alone, all who gather for worship – young, old and every age in between – are participants in the liturgy of the Church.  Those who feel called to a distinct role in worship are encouraged to speak to a member of the clergy or contact the Parish Office.  Opportunities for ministry include:

Altar/Flower Guild
A volunteer group whose ministry is to care for the altar, vestments, sacred vessels, and altar linens of the parish.  Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services, and clean up afterwards.  They also oversee decoration of the sanctuary with flowers.

Crucifer
The acolyte who carries the cross in processions.  The crucifer often assists in other ways.

Torch Bearer
An acolyte who carries a torch in procession.  Members of the Youth Choir are often chosen to carry out this ministry.

Acolyte
In contemporary usage, a general term which covers not only those who assist at the altar during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, but also torch bearers, crucifers, thurifers, and banner bearers.

Lector
A trained lay person who reads the lessons or leads the Prayers of the People during the liturgy.

Chalice Bearer
A lay person licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist.

Lay Eucharistic Visitor
A lay person licensed by the bishop to share the Blessed Sacrament with members of the congregation who, through illness or infirmity, are unable to be present for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

Chorister
A member of one of the parish choirs.  Choristers rehearse weekly to prepare beautiful, finely-crafted music for the glory of God and the edification of the worshipping community.

Usher
A lay person who greets and assists people as they enter the church. Ushers may hand out service leaflets, answer questions of visitors and newcomers, count the number of people in the congregation, collect and present the offering at the offertory, assist parishioners during the administration of Communion, and clean the pews and church building after the service.

Greeter
An individual who volunteers to welcome visitors and newcomers as they leave after the service.
